I am able to imagine great paintings because I have seen many. I have automatically learned what a great painting is.
If I practiced rendering that imagination to canvas, I would eventually learn to paint great paintings
When learning something more direct like say lessons in school, the understanding seems to happen at a high level but thats just the experience of the result of all the levels. Basically your brain is constantly doing something thats actually many ways functionally similar to backpropogation, so its constantly training and acting at the same time and you experience the outputs as they occur. So as you think of verbal understanding which is literally just representation of deeper nonverbal modelling, that nonverbal model gets locked in with others in your knowledge graph and thats a concept learned.
Neural nets have knowledge graphs too, just look at tsne visualization or Umap visualization.
