I am a software engineer with 6 years of work experience and counting. I actually got my undergrad degree in economics, but a Bachelor of Arts. While I aced my Econ courses, I took the bare minimum of mathematics. I did okay in intro statistics, performed like a retard in calc.
I really enjoyed the stats I took, and writing empirical papers. Today, I work in the front office of a pro sports team, building their player evaluation and strategy platform among other things. However, I don’t author mathematical models or research and build new understandings of the game. That is what I want to do.
All I’ve used recently is ordinary least squares linear regression and simple statistical tests like Chao Test, T-Test. I would like to eventually leverage machine learning to adapt and analyze the world.
How can I go from a layperson in this world, to competent, while self-teaching? I self-taught programming, with the help of a 9-week bootcamp. I know it can be done. Make it easy on me, I’m 32. Advice?
