I never understood why telescopes don't use a transparent pane instead of the struts.

It would lower the image quality unless the pane was perfectly flat with no surface features and that would add to the cost of the telescope.
Some telescope types actually have the secondary mirror suspended in a lens at the opening. The lens is only used for correcting spherical abberations of the main mirror.
