Perelman + Wiles. Any brainlet can come up with some theory like IUT or cohomology, but it takes an ubermensch to actually solve problems that stumped other mathematicians for 100s of years. I will always respect Wiles and the current/future mathematicians who solve the millennium problems more than any other.

People say that, but I feel it undermines the magnitude of what they did. Yeah, there could have been many, many other mathematicians who put the pieces together before them, used the same tools they did, but nobody did. If we wanted to play semantics, technically peano should be credited for FLT, he discovered arithmetic in the first place, Wiles only used it to follow through with the proof.

I'm not trying to undermine their achievements, but it's not like they were starting from scratch either. For example, the development of Ricci flow was vital to Perelman's proof of the Poincare conjecture. Obviously, I would say that Perelman deserves the bulk of the credit, but I don't think it's fair to undermine the work of Hamilton either.

Grothendieck and von Neuman are both up there. I just got into reading Eulers papers, and the fact that I can read them without having a math degree and understand what the fuck is going on, suggests that he was also one of the best.
