That is: do absolutely nothing and stay perfectly still. You see this all the time and there's even a phrase that is based around it: "deer in the headlights".
There are a couple reasons why it would work as a viable means of self preservation. Firstly, if you're in an area where visibility is low and you aren't blatantly spotted (that is to say, you just think a predator may be in the vicinity but you can't verify it), then staying completely still is a solid option. It camouflages you with your surroundings since you aren't moving and your silhouette won't be broken up by moving against the background. You also make 0 noise, and often times predators have spectacular hearing. And in a dense forest, sound is often more useful than sight.
