Why would you want a planet made of gold? If we discovered one, and could extract it, gold would be so devaluated it would be cheaper than dirt.

It's not that it couldn't happen, but there is such a greater abundance of other lighter elements that when the stellar remnants collapse to form planets, the gold (and silver and platinum) is vastly outnumbered.

Think of it like a pizza.

Because we know how gold is made, and it requires a lot of energy compared to other elements; basically it's only created in gamma ray bursts and phenomena which are rare in the universe. Gold is gonna be rare anywhere; about the same as in the earth. You literally will never find a gold planet just floating around.
