Civil engineering is much older than mechanical engineering. The oldest citation I have ever seen in a modern engineering paper was for an essay written in 1773 by Coulomb on soil strength.

the Euler-Bernoulli was developed for beams (explicitly civil) around 1750. That being said Coloumb wasn't much later either and geotech is pretty much exclusively in the civil field also
