Is studying physics pointless?

If he studied computer science, he would be earning £50k+ a year.

It just that I quit studying Physics and went into programming instead. I regret the decision, but I know I would have ended up like this guy.

Imagine getting a PhD in Physics just to work in a call centre where your treated like shit. He looks like a virgin aswell.

Why not just study EE and focus on quantum optics or semiconductor physics? You'll be more employable then a physics major but you'll still be doing physics.

I have a physics PhD, dropped out of academia to try to start a business and went bankrupt. Couldn't find a job for months. Went to interviews like an idiot, and was not called back. Had to sell my car, cancel my health insurance and go into debt to eat.

Did I kill myself? No. At a random moment a company contacted me through linkedin and offered me a data analysis job, which I took. They wanted someone with a PhD. Meanwhile I am also trying to start a new business. I'm still poor, but here and alive. Things may take time to get right, but if you are persistent you will end up being lucky at some point.

In any case, by all means learn Python, HTML+CSS, Linux and maybe some Django or React while you are still in academia. It will open you new doors.

I agree that most of the time it's not worth it, most grad students are deluded if they think that they will ever get a job as a professor. And getting this kind of job is not necessarily so much a matter of intelligence, it is all about being able to get lots of collaborators and write lots of irrelevant papers at a fast pace.

Here's the thing, and I'm not trying to be a dick because I'm totally in the same boat, but most people who have kids do so without any regard to some arbitrary prerequisite level of income and "social status."
Honestly it's something that just happens to them. It's as natural as breathing.
The fact that we have to garner status just to do something as basic as reproducing signifies that we are inherently undesirable in some fundamental way.

The point of the story is to highlight the tragedy of a highly qualified, highly educated young man in a field that is objectively highly sought after, being employed far below his skillset and knowledge level. He probably felt despair over the fact that he invested at least a decade of his life into his passion and yet was rewarded only with a low-level job that a competent 7th grader could do.

No, it just means that central banks have pushed inequality to such a degree that even middle class people are now miserable, and unable to afford a home and kids. Things were very different 50 years ago, when the government debt was not at such ridiculous levels.

Even people in the hood have to garner social status somehow, even if it comes down to physical intimidation, or just being an able conversationist.

Studying computer science at the undergrad level alone scores you a good entry level position, but you haven’t really studied computer science as much as you have the basics of software dev. People who study CS are at the PhD level themselves and either work in national / industry labs or in academia.

Anyway, while there is an issue of lack of funding in the PhD, I’d say the biggest issue is that people who really don’t have the passion or intent to do research as a career go into the PhD expecting instant prestige points. It’s a modern apprenticeship that takes years - you have to want to not give a shit about prestige, let go of your ego, and want to actually investigate math, science, engineering, etc..
in that regard, I don’t find studying physics “pointless” at all.

You would be overqualified for entry level software jobs. There are a lot of industry positions you can get as a PhD holder (this goes for people in math, TCS, engineering, and physics PhDs) on heading engineering teams, on starting businesses, on going into quant work, in doing national lab work, and of course postdocs. The issue is that the PhD is the gateway into research - you should be certain you want to do research of some kind

It’s not “publish or perish” as much as it’s “publish results other people can use where they can access it easily.”
