There are a number of causes, ranging from questionable research practices, where the author for example fails to report on all conditions under which the research took place, to actual fraudulent research.
Psychology in particular is hit pretty hard by this crisis, but things like water management are not a whole lot better.
>What is the point of replication?We want to be able to reproduce the results of a study because this shows us that the conclusion of the paper is correct. If this cannot be done you obviously cannot use the conclusion of the paper for anything because you don't know if it is actually valid for your case, if it's ever valid to begin with.
