How exactly does gravity slow down time?

Synchronized clocks that are placed at different altitudes eventually come out of sync due to different levels of gravity.

gravity stretches spacetime. Literally. The curvature changes and so does the metric (the way we measure distance/time). Think about how pilots, who have to deal with the positive curvature of the Earth measure distances vs say architects who work on flat ground. Same with gravity. As long as there is little mass the spacetime is flat and we measure it using special relativity.

Not an expert, but my understand is that time is counted by means of units of motion (the clock hand has moved a specific distance that means a second has passed). Gravity stretches space and therefore the effective distance that the clock hand must travel is larger making a second relatively longer. Can anyone who studies this stuff verify this?

pretty much this, except time is a more abstract 4th coordinate in relativity that has it's own parallels with the other 3 coordinates rather than just a physical clock hand.

Then what if I were to be perfectly on beat in my head counting up by 1 second and got moved around very fast or very slow near or not near massive objects that bend spacetime dramatically compared to my base. The time I'm experiencing based on the counting in my head will always be perfect regardless of where or how I travel. Is my counting in my head wrong then?
