Grad students and postdocs go for science, PIs go for vacationing. And it's the PIs who are actually on the important committees making decisions for conferences. So no it will never happen

I do have to say, I like the idea of not having to deal with just looking at a poster and then the person goes into their whole spiel.

Seems it would be a lot harder for the networking and random discussion leading to collaboration to take place in a virtual setting as opposed to having everyone actually spend all day in the same room.

Of course it’d be fine to have workshops/seminars virtually but that’s not really the main function of conventions, the presentations are there to bring people together and get them talking to each other about useful topics rather than the other way around.
