The gene can be activated in some individuals and deactivated in others. Those whom have the gene deactivated tend to display abnormal neuronal migration, reduced GABAergic neurons, spontaneous seizures and behavioral traits associated with those with ASD.
There were a few studies on mice that I read about where they deactivated the gene and they noted increases in excessive grooming (repetition) and more abnormal social behaviors when the gene was deactivated.
Actually, anyone here heard about that mouse utopia experiment? Eventually, the male mice wouldn't breed but excessively cleaned themselves. I think they had mouse autism by the end of it.
