My mom got her undergrad in geology. She's a middle school science teacher now but she sure does collect rocks. My childhood home is filled with interesting rocks, vials of sand, petrified wood, fossils, etc. It's comfy as fuck and I absolutely recommend it.

Geotechnical engineering is ass. Geotechnicals are dirt engineers, not rock engineers. Geological engineering is where the real cool shit happens.

I did a Bachlor of Science majoring in Geoscience and now I work as a hydrogeologist (mostly groundwater modelling and not so much field work). It's good.

also, it's just plain competitive. Geology is romantic idea, but realistically you just get pigeon holed in the a specific aspect, and it gets harder to find work the longer you stay in it because that's all you do.

Geology has gotten very saturated over the past 7 years. So all I got to say is get as much experience in everything as much as possible, but mostly try to get your GIT.

No, it makes sense. I'm the hydrogeologist. Geology is so multifaceted that there's no way you can be a broad "geologist" in either industry, government, or academia. You pick a section of it that you enjoy and/or will get you work.

I hate polished rocks. Minerals are pretty as they are and the only good reason to grind them down into homogenized lumps is if they were weathered to shit to begin with That's a personal preference though.

Geological engineering has some similarities with geotechnical engineering in that both are concerned with the interface between engineered structures and the earth. Geotechnical engineers are more specialized in that, while geological engineers are more broadly trained in other areas of geology such as drilling and ore bodies.

Knowing this, I think the distinction matters only in certain regions. Geological engineering is a degree offered in schools that are in areas historically associated with mining and petroleum, and geological engineers can be employed in those industries doing things that a geotechnical would never be doing. I've also known a lot of geological engineers who were employed doing geotechnical things because there is a lot of overlap between the two fields.
