There seem to be heavy hitters in CS who end up in the math departments by joint appointment, and of course there are those who have some background from double majoring in math with CS in undergrad.
I was under the impression that people in TCS PhD’s learn whatever mathematics they please in order to write in their desired subfields. Some people do nothing but some basic complexity and some basic algorithms. Other people do quantum hamiltonians or geometric complexity. This is, at least from what I hear, how it goes.
