The more nuanced reason is that when an axial torque is applied to the road either due to vehicles or wind, the curved bridge dissipates the stresses better than a straight road. On a long, straight bridge, the stress is distributed entirely as shear stresses along the length of the bridge. When the road is curved, the stress is also supported by the pylons because they are offset from the axis of the torque due to the curve and can therefore apply a moment in the opposite direction.
