Just heard Peter Thiel and Eric Weinstein talk about how the polymath will be a thing of the past. Does /sci/ have any experience with polymaths?

1. You're possibly overestimating the frequency of polymaths in History.
2. It's quite hard to produce meaningful work in multiple fields nowadays. In the past, an amateur astronomer or some guy who also did some engineering could make it, but that's just not the case anymore. It's not impossible to work with multiple things, just less accessible than it was in the past.

Mass entertainment and the sexual revolution. Many polymaths were the economic elite or at least connected to them, combine that with the fact there was barely any entertainment back in ye olde times and sex was sin, the class of people with enough wealth and leisure time could really only get entertainment from looking at the world around them and in their head.

It's impossible due to bureaucrats removing the ability for individuals to participate in any field without several years of study that is wholly irrelevant to the fields in question. In the 21st century you aren't even able to suture a wound without studying for several years.

Bureaucrats have ruined the ability for most to experience a diverse and deep experience within the job market.

His political adage really resonates with me

The reproducibility crisis in science, the qualm of independently verified global climate data, the gatekeeping of journals, clear shilling for a narrow overton window of science are all good counter arguements to why polymathy will only get thiner as the spread becomes ever larger but why its sorely needed to aid in the testing, verifying, concluding and revising back into the hypothesis stage.
