A person who puts his own consciousness over any goal, specially those that would result in general good, are being egoistic. In the first scenario you would be sinning so others would not be obligated to, in the second scenario you are puting your own consciousness over others.
Tell me, do you think that killing is bad? I suppose so, so I think that you would be making someone a favor for taking people out of a situation where they would be obligated to kill. So if you had the opportunity to kill a warlord who takes children and turns them into child-soldiers, Would you do it? or if your consciousness of never killing someone more important than the child's? Will you do nothing while those childrerinos are being obligated to do the same thing you despise so much?
