The actual reason is that it is indeed caused by the earth's tilt, specifically due to Guass's law. The energy input on the surface of the earth decreases as the angle between the solar flux and the ground increases up to 90 degrees. At 90 degrees, there is no energy input. Due to the Earth's tilt there is nowhere that stays orthogonal to the sun's rays.
It's basic trigonometry once you get past the fields. At an angle of 60 degrees with respect to the sun's rays, you get half the solar radiation across each square meter of the ground as you do at 0 degrees.
