Can someone explain to me how we are protected from EMPs in our daily lives?

What's stopping someone from building one in their home and blowing up a city block, frying everything?

A much easier and discrete way of cutting power to large sections of a city is through targeting critical infrastructure with firearms or explosives. There was almost a major blackout in California a number of years ago caused by someone taking potshots at transformers. A more organized version of that kind of attack is a lot more feasible than a terrorist constructing some sort of EMP device, nuclear or otherwise, in a garage.

yeah if you use a nuke. But it will only be powerful enough to take out the power grid. Even at the strongest field level it shouldn't be capable of taking out cars or small electronic devices. If nukes start to fly you've got bigger problems than your electronics working. The power grid threat is something of a problem. In the US, the grid could be made much more resistant to EMP and solar flares by putting some big fat resistors to ground in the right places.
