It's not a normal algebra book at all. Focused on geometry. Artin is a good comparison, although Artin is meant to be more introductory. It's very "loose" as well like Artin which some do not like. It's doesn't cover everything standard for algebra but it does cover some interesting topics like Lie groups and representations. If you do geometry or physics then this book will be better than standard books.

it is the best "first book" in algebra out there and BTFOs pretty much everything else, only one that comes close is Artin (D&F/Jacobson and similar books don't count, they're basically encyclopedias/references)

Would recommend Ehrlich for a light but comprehensive overview. (only 300 pages) Vinberg is probably fine, though.

This anon is a retard. D&F has some exceptional exposition and is great for a very thorough introduction.

yes and it's great

DF is too encyclopedic. it has good exposition, but you really don't need all that it offers for a first course
