Many campuses in the USA have extremely strong "campus cultures"; they're basically their own little cities, with their own shops and restaurants and social scene and nightlife and all that that consists almost exclusively of students.
A commuter school will have (comparatively speaking) little of that going on since most of the students just drive in for class and then leave.
