You think Boston Dynamics has been working on this shit for a decade without ever planning to sell robots?

They are at the point some businesses will have a use for them making them a viable product.

they are selling a prototype tho. and since they selling it to the public, they have no plans of selling it for "top secret" uses from the government because hacking, knowing its weakness, etc since you can just buy one.

My uni got the predecessor of it, cheetah something a few years ago and I think the robotics prof said it the price was close to a million euros.

Exactly. SpaceX has 2 or more of these in use. They need it for when their rocket experiment blows up and you can't have people over there inspecting right away. You need to wait 12+ hours before they can go ahead and see. 12 hour lost on multimillion dollar project is expensive shit. Instead, if they use their $75K robot dog to inspect, log all the data and cut down time by half, they have recoup the cost in that single use alone.

Being a paramedic and having this thing carry all your shit for you. Firegithing ? The Army ? The police could use this thing to patrol the streets.I bet the guys cleaning up Fukushima right now would love to have something like this. I've always wondered how Boston Dynamics secures funding. do people legitimately believe they'll produce a product this way that is marketable? it's interesting from the engineering perspective but I can't see investors thinking "people want a robot that can walk like a human"

Why wouldn't they? Apart from being cool, being able to traverse human navigatable terrain means the use cases grow exponentially. They already have robot delivery bots all over university campuses. It isn't hard to program paths for robots to take, but they're severely limited by the need for ramps.

looks like a gimmick to me. if this is to be used is on rocky countryside terrain (why would they need this in the first place?) then yeah maybe. but in flat urban cities and building wheels are much cheaper, more efficient and better.
