One of my profs said that maybe 5% actually do design work of any real interest, with maybe 10% of those doing anything cutting edge (space, fighter jets, etc.). The rest do analysis and systems engineering and paperwork... but to be fair, that describes all engineering in my experience.
Aerospace pay is good, but employment can be choppy, so save up.
