linear = line
algebra = equation

linear algebra = line equation

Y = MX + B is literally the equation of all lines.

Use Lax, Hoffman&Kunze, Roman or Lang if you are going into mathematical physics. Lax's Lin Alg and Functional Analysis books are geared towards both mathematicians and mathematical/theoretical physicists.
