I'm always told to maintain almost all the doors and windows open for at least 12h straight in order to not die by asphyxiation.

Makes me wonder how this building is even possible.

If you’re in brazil your family might have actually grown up in a place where asphyxiation was possible due to poor ventilation, presence of low levels of toxic shit from coal or gas, etc. It’s not the most uncommon belief in the world. In any country with even the most rudimentary building codes, a building the size of the one in OP's pic will have an HVAC system to takes care of ventilation, diluting all of the conditioned air with some small percentage of outside air and exhausting used air to the outside, usually through the bathrooms.

This makes me wonder about building codes for small places. For instance, the apartment I live in is extremely tight against drafts when all the windows are closed, and is heated by electric resistance. It has no default or automatic provision for ventilation, and if not for opening windows or running the kitchen/bathroom exhausts, the CO2 buildup must be considerable.

Happens every winter too. Some inner city dweller refuses to pay their utility bills and finally gets their service disconnected. Instead of settling that, they go out and buy a gas powered heater, stick it in a room for everyone to sleep in and none of them ever wake up again.

You're all crazy if you don't think 95%+ of the people working in that building have some sort of mental illness. It would be nice if they told people it was just some storage space or server space.

Your doors and windows probably aren't as airtight as you think. It's also likely the bathroom 'exhaust' is always running on some basic maintenance level. You should still open a window every so often.
