We have all these fungicides and herbicides but I just want to cause exponential growth and make plants overtake cities

What the hell do you think fertilizer is?
Or GMOs.
You would genuinely not recognize the original wild variety of most crops because thousands of years of selective breeding.

I'm fully aware of fertilizer and GMOs. Rather than a solution that provides essential nutrients to the plant/fungus like fertilizer, I was thinking of a solution that actually accelerated the growth, something that would be used in addition to the fertilizer since exponential growth would need exponential nutrients.

I know nothing about the field but I imagine these things already do exist and are constantly being researched and developed. It's probably just not super easy. It might be a little like asking "why hasn't science developed a way to make humans and their offspring super tall and strong yet"

And also, there are probably various ecological considerations and trade-offs, where overgrowth of one thing could possibly kill other things and eventually lead to the death of the original thing you want to grow, etc.

The environment and biosphere are very complex and chaotic, especially when you're trying to dramatically increase or decrease the population size of a particular species.
