If AI can understand language, why wouldn't it understand mathematics?

A freshman with rudimentary programming skills can routinely program a computer to write code. This is no way has to do with AI.
And actually, the skillset that companies require of university graduates is completely aligned with what any contemporary desktop computer is capable of doing anyway.

Humans genuinely are in some ways Chinese rooms in the sense that we learn language contextually. When someone says that they were feeling aroused, started stroking themselves and gurfed all over their pants, we all know what that means despite the word never having been used before and not having any strong onomatopoeic character

This is only because we can draw on our experiences though, so a machine can't have true AI until it can see, feel, and hear the world as we experience it.

It's just an incredibly complex network of neurons; extremely simplified version are already mastering music composition, writing, creation of visual art etc. By no means perfectly but it illustrates that the basic concept of a network training on masses of data can do a great many things which we used to define as uniquely human. At that point it's just a question of scale and of understanding newer and better network models.

Fuck, maybe designing better networks is something we can get the GANs to do.
