When did science stop being professional?

Modern science conferences look like a bunch of people getting ready for a bbq, not to share and learn about the cutting edge science of your field.

I went into a scientific field hoping it would be professional, formal and meaningful. But it's just a bunch of normies who can slap an experiment together and outsource their own analyses to Indians overseas. Where did it go wrong?
