What papers have you found recently that you thought were interesting?

This paper on magnons really peaked my interest. I hadn't heard of magnons as a singular concept before but it seems like a very promising lead for creating electronics with significantly less heat loss.

Forgot to mention the real important bit. They did it with silicon! It's actually a practical material instead of fucking ZnCoFGa or something.

Basically there is a charge differential lining up a bunch of electrons in material. Altogether these electrons have a shared magnetic moment, the technology in question essentially allows that magnetic moment to be modulated producing waves that can be detected and processed as 1's, 0's, or even fractional values. The upside being that since the electrons are relatively stationary during this process there is very little energy that becomes heat so your electronics won't overheat anymore

those are atomic clocks. they (currently) use hyperfine transition in caesium, but will likely be redefined in the near-future to be optical transitions in strontium, which is currently more accurate.
nuclear clocks involve transitions of the nuclear state. they're better than atomic clocks because the nucleus is much more shielded from its surroundings because of the electron cloud screening any outside fields. however nuclear transitions are extremely hard to excite with lasers since most nuclear transitions are in the x- or gamma-ray spectrum, except for a very specific transition in Thorium. current experiments are trying to pinpoint the energy so that UV lasers can be developed for it.

Huh, this may sound a bit naive but why not use NMR type experiments to pin down the oscillation of nucli? Is it because it needs to be a single nucleus?

I'm talking about nuclear excited states. think excited states of an atom (when a valence electron is excited) except it's for the nucleus. the valence quarks are getting excited.

sometimes in nuclear decay the resulting nucleus is excited and emits a gamma ray when it deexcites to the ground nuclear state. this is doing the reverse of that process
