It is a great tragedy that people played STALKER series, and Dead Space, and didn't recognize that a lot of it was rooted in fact. In STALKER the effects anomalies and some of the creatures (like controllers) are real, and draw from the long Soviet history in magnetobiology and bioelectromagnetics. Kiev, Ukraine was a major location for this research.

In Dead Space the marker generates a signal which "produces a unique type of dementia". Kind of like cell towers, eh? We're already seeing cases of dementia onset in the mid 30's. Early onset alzheimers. Hm, I wodner why. Seems that a signal gave them a unique type of dementia.
