It is a cool technology with some applications. I know absolutely for a fact that engineer-type people print small parts with it. If you had circuits and wires I imagine you could probably go your whole life without paying anybody to fix anything if you had a 3d printer.
But if you thought youd be printing everything in seconds yeah you absolutely got scammed. Last time I checked metal sintering machines were right on the verge of usability which I think is pretty obvious code that suggests they were unusable/unworkable or that they genuinely are a thing now, just for specific purposes like all machines.
Im sure the aqueduct made some people think water could simply be sloped everywhere at first.

Sintered parts are becoming increasingly common in aerospace propulsion. The complex geometries that are inherent with those sorts of components actually makes printing a much more economical option than standard machining.

I'm an architect and 3d printing is really fucking helpful for building models. But we barely build models anymore, so meh. But I've used it to create some custom household items, for example a sort of filter for the dishwasher, rings for a shower curtain because I could not find rings in the correct size, a cap for a flagpole with a surveillance camera attached, where the cable needed to run through the cap, a bunch of cover clips for window hinges on a boat, a bunch of clips for hinges on a plane..
So yeah its pretty useful for niche stuff or creating aftermarket parts you can't find easily, but not very useful for the average joe.

look at the picture. Look at the scale bars. Micrometer resolution over the scale of centimeters. This can be scaled up to meters. And it gets crazier. By printing structures like this you can make ceramics that aren't brittle.

This is also witchcraft. So you know how if you drop a coffee mug it breaks? Well ceramics tend to break when stretched or compressed a tiny amount. But with this fucking witchcraft you can make ceramics that are flexy. So if you dropped a coffee mug made of that stuff it'd go BOING instead of CRACK! Ceramics are useful because they can withstand really high temperatures, but we don't tend to use them because of them being brittle.

holy shit we can print metals in addition to just plastic/ceramic. The ceramics can be piezoelectric too. This is really fucking neat. Piezoelectrics can convert motion into electricity or vice versa. So this is potentially useful for robots and stuff.

There's a few of those at my work that the engineers use to prototype parts and build quick parts they need to get something working.
Nobody in the science teams have done anything with them though but that's probably partly because of the barrier of entry for us since we don't have instant access to them.
The only thing I ever wanted to print from one was a capsule holder and I just ended up buying a capsule machine for ~$15.

I think my innate dislike for owning anything that doesn't serve a useful purpose keeps me from having anything I want to print (most things I've seen people print outside of work are just toys). Anyone got any cool ideas?

Also, designing or even looking up and printing things takes effort compared to going to the store or just pressing buy on amazon that takes basically no effort. And the majority of Americans are incredibly lazy and can not handle anything that requires any amount of effort, so just like they will pay several times more for someone to cook their food, they will pay several times more for someone to make their shit.

I think they've always just approached it from the wrong angle.

They've tried to sell it like it's something you'd want in your home. And you'd NEVER really need something like this in your home.

What they should do, instead, is take a "local blacksmith" approach. Where there's a local store/factory that can manufacture anything you send them. A local economy could develop around people creating blueprints; it'd be like an iTunes store for physical objects. And because this'd be a professional environment, they can update the hardware more frequently. (Unlike a consumer 3D printer, which would be dated within a month after buying it)

That's what I think, anyway. It's only a matter of time before someone with actual money gets the idea. Once it does, we'll have manufacturing back in the states again

My guess is that when 3d printing becames more available it won't print anything until you lease the blueprints from companies and it will leave some type of marking to show its approved. The materials will cost more. Police will raid you for illegaly printing full sized anime girls.

I have a crazy idea of something I'd like to see in the future. I'd like to see a 3d printer that has a metal recycling system. You melt down any metal that you have inside of its forge and then that metal is used for printing metallic things. You could recycle your own aluminum cans or take that gaudy jewelry that your relatives gave you a long time ago and turn that into something neat.

I imagine printing circuit boards will become a thing too. At first, people will print computers that are the size of refrigerators, but clever people will rapidly optimize the blueprint and before you know it you'll be able to print your own powerful computer from some plastic resin and scrap metal.

you still have to design the part first if you can't do that or aren't willing to spend the hours it takes to get even simple things right the printer is basically useless and only good to print trinkets of thingiverse
