Why isn't there an antidote to pepper spray? It seems like milk is the go-to of neutralizing it, but couldn't we just take whatever is in the milk and concentrate it?

It's usually just capsaicin (the chemical that makes spicy peppers spicy). So if there's an antidote to spicy food, that'd likely work for most forms of pepper spray, too. I don't know if there's anything like that, though.

One option is trying to build up tolerance. Here's a woman eating tons of ghost peppers and rubbing them in her eyes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qD-0fEvJv2c. She probably wouldn't be very fazed by pepper spray.

capsaicin is fat-soluble, which is why it's not a good idea to touch your face after handling spicy stuff even after washing your hands

Could we use gene therapy to knock out the genes responsible for sensing spiciness, thereby becoming immune to pepper spray?

Maybe your mouth is used to it but what of your body?

Also interesting fact is that capsaicin is an allergic reaction. Birds can munch on hot peppers all day long.

HUH?

I thought repeated exposure to allergens increased the immune responsiveness. Why is it then I can build up resistance to spicy food by slowly eating hotter and hotter dishes?

It doesn't affect birds but it's not an allergic response at all. It mimics the exact same response as exposure to real (temperature) heat. So it kind of creates something like a tactile illusion, I guess.

Also, I'm sure she's in real pain from, you know, rubbing lots of the hottest peppers on Earth straight into her eyes, but it's still a testament to her incredibly high tolerance. If even like 0.1% of that got into the eyes of an ordinary American, they'd probably immediately start screaming and feel like they got pepper sprayed.

Milk is convenient because it can dissolve fats and oils but it's also water based so it's easy to clean up. It's kind of like soap in that regard but it's safe to ingest. Any colloidal fat-water mixture shoud be good for getting rid of capsaicin. It's not an antidote per se, it's more that the milk washes the capsaicin oil away. Milk with higher fat content should be better at it, so find an animal that has really fatty milk like a walrus and use that.

Interesting. I wonder why this isn't used as a replacement for micro-needling?
The whole point of micro-needling the skin is to produce very small amounts of superficial damage, which trigger a general immune response, restoring the skin to better than it's initial conditions.

I'd guess creating the illusion of a skin burn, via capsaicin, should produce a similar healing response. right? That is till you became desensitized to it, so there are limits I suppose. Then again for this to have any effect at all you'd have to be in constant physical agony, so maybe it's a terrible idea.
