It depends on the specific field and what he's claiming to be the case within that field. In any case, I'd evaluate his scientific claims according to how closely they align to reality. If the majority of them are not likely to be the case based on the available evidence, and/or if his reasoning is flawed, then I would conclude that it is highly unlikely that he has more knowledge than I. If his claims are backed up by research and experiment, then I would conclude that it is highly likely that he is competent in this area.
