Part of the problem is that things like the IMF wont loan poor countries money to establish subsistence farming, so they push cash crop monocultures instead, but only ones that aren't going to compete with protected markets like corn or cotton.

Because a diverse subsistence farming program is harder to be wiped out by a single thing.

it's being worked on. A promising approach is to produce hydrogen to feed bacteria which live off of hydrogen. If you use solar power to make the hydrogen, it's more efficient than photosynthesis. In addition, basically everything that comes out of the process can be turned into edible food stuffs. Plants make a bunch of inedible cellulose, bacteria don't.
