How do you pass your quals? Faculty committee. How do you get your dissertation approved? Same. That's how you get hired for a tenure track position, how you get papers into journals and conferences, how you get promotion and tenure, how you get on ERBs, how you chair panels, how you get grants approved.
Last I checked, my P&T document includes a service to university and community component. Guess who decides what counts? Yep, you guessed it, faculty committee.
If you're only just this second discovering that professoring is incredibly political, then you're still an undergrad.
