Nowadays they have the TEM (Tpa?c?op??o-??ep?e???ec??? ?o?y??), developed by TsNIImash, which is part of a larger project involving Rosatom and Roscosmos. It has a megawatt-class energy source, which is far greater than any previous reactor put in space. Flight tests will begin in 2030.

Neither USA nor Europe has anything similar.

The TEM will use the YaEDU reactor. The power system weights 6800 kg, including power conversion system.

Droplet radiators are how you lose your coolant in a couple hours, and you don't even get thrust from it.

This is a gas cooled, fast neutron spectrum, oxide fueled reactor with 1Mwe output, which means 4Mwt of thermal output. Expected life of about 10 years.

There is some recent news about the University of Leicester and ESA experimenting with 241Am as RTG fuel, which is available for any nation with reprocessing capabilities (Euratom + UK). 238Pu is still preferred in terms of specific power, but the cost and infrastructure required is prohibitive for Europe.

The power conversion system will be either a Brayton cycle gas turbine, or a thermionic system. The first is superior but is difficult to make into a high temperature astronuclear system, while the second is well understood and has already been used in Soviet systems.

The reactor will be cooled by a mix of He and Xe. Inlet temp of 1200K, outlet temp 1500K.
The tubes will be made of Mo, Ta, W and Nb alloys.

The prototype for the power plant would be completed by 2025, and life testing on the reactor would be completed by 2030, according to Roscosmos.
This is the second major delay in the program.
The Vostnochy Cosmodrome facilities will be completed by 2030, when the first mass-production TEMs are planned to be deployed.

It is going to be big for GEO sats. An inter-orbital tug that can come and place your sat in the final orbit is game changer. Also for decomissioning old sats (currently dragging down things to be burned is costly in mass).
Interplanetary missions will also be a thing.

The key for apace travel is to impart the most energy in a propellent, direct nuclear sucks on that, since in general, reactors must be massive compared with the actual reacting fuel and there is a limit for the exhaust temperature, that means that you will need more mass to achieve more impulse.
Indirect nuclear is way more practical, powering some kind of heavy ion particle accelerator should be the way.

The Primary propulsion system is the ID-500 gridded ion engine, specifically designed for the TEM/YaEDU, as standard ion engines couldn't handle either the power input or the flow rates.

Max power 35kW. Can throttle from 375-750 mN. 7000 s isp.

The spacecraft has 5 of them.

Currently to decomission a GEO sat it has to be healthy enough to either maneuver into a higher graveyard orbit (which btw are getting more and more crowded), or sink down to the atmosphere and burn.
If the sat breaks before that, it occupies a valuble orbit and the operator can't do shit.
The TEM can drag a completely defunct satellite out of GEO.

Here is a question I have been wondering lately.

The goal of nuclear fusion reactors is net power to be positive, but what if that wasn't the goal.

Is a nuclear fusion reactor the most efficient way to make hot plasma?
For example say I had a reactor powered by a bank of batteries and a tank of deuterium. Is this the best way to make hot plasma for other purposes? Say a Fusion rocket or some other use.

Yeah except explosion pulse propulsion hasn't been experimented beyond small model propelled by conventional explosives. Solid core NTRs are 60's-70's tech and could easily be used today if it wasn't for normies fearing the n-word.
