What do you guys think is the most based subfield of Electrical Engineering and why? I have to go with Signal Processing, it's one of the most math intensive subfields.

I really enjoyed signal processing but I found microwaves more enjoyable because of the physics and hardware component of it.

I'll go with Applied EM. EMC, microwave engineering, optronics. Hell, Metamaterials crossed the bridge between optics and microwave engineering.

From what I've seen most of our automation and other tech is quite new. Nobody wants to work with soviet technology. What tech did you have in mind though? Maybe I misunderstood

Literally I have designed new power conversion machines in undergrad courses in Power Engineering, although there is a lot of comformism in the industry there's always present development of tech too
