Up to that point, the determination is upheld by everything being new. This rule appplies to anything - dieting, drinking, jogging etc.
Approaching 2 years, you statrt thinking "really, never again...?", less intellectual & more emotional. If you can make it to the 3 year mark only then you can start to settle back from Alert Mode. Seen it happen to so many people.
