(My first post on /sci/ pls help)

I have an anxiety disorder and upon my own research I hypothesize that I have an issue with my GABA receptors that is causing me to feel the way I do.

Help me understand the role of GABA w/ anxiety disorders & how it works.

Who can I talk to about treatment and how can I fix this issue?

I had social phobia when I was a kid and used to have panic attacks walking down the halls in high school because I felt overwhelmed. For some reason it just went away with time. Now I have no issues talking to strangers or speaking in front of a group. Therapy is a better option than medication when it comes to treating anxiety disorders. If anything try a beta blocker before taking the benzos. Benzos work because they work on everyone. They are easy to become dependent on even if you take them as prescribed, however if you have panic attacks often enough— they are a good thing to have around.

The psychiatrist puts you on drugs, which you very likely will end up addicted to for 5, 10 years, maybe even longer. And these drugs will mess your brain up, make you suicidal or self-destructive, make you weaker in the long run and make you become more unable to handle your feelings using your own natural capabilities/strength, and they destroy your personality and sense of self, change your likes and dislikes (so you like things you otherwise normally wouldn't and dislike things you otherwise normally wouldn't), and cause you to not know what you truly want. And the psychiatrist convinces you that there's something physically wrong with you (there isn't), that you're broken somehow. This fucks with your perception of yourself, and makes it much more difficult for you to recover / fix yourself. Because you keep the "a psych doctor gave me a diagnosis, it's official: i'm broken" in the back of your head all the time subconsciously. That alone is very destructive, even if you don't get poisoned with any drugs.

No offense, OP, but this is not a substantive hypothesis. GABA is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter (meaning its emission causes the post-synaptic neuron to reduce is membrane potential and hence have a lower chance of firing). It used ubiquitously throughout the brain for innumerable purposes (it is estimated that 30% of synapses present GABA receptors). Some GABArgic drugs (benzos, alcohol, barbituates) reliably reduce anxiety, but to say that anxiety is itself a problem with GABA receptors is an enormous oversimplification of the subject. The truth is that emotional disturbances are too complex to be understood by contemporary science. You can go to a doctor and get prescribed a drug that will make you feel numb. But do not think that you have a known medical condition that is being treated. Taking psychiatric medication is really no different than drinking some whiskey every night to help you get to sleep (in fact, whiskey is probably less dangerous). I don't doubt that you have a serious anxiety problem and that it may be neurological in origin. I'm just saying that the science is not advanced enough yet to do anything helpful. You are much more likely to find relief by hiring a good therapist
