I should clarify we did really good up to this point. But progress requires so much complexity and effort at this point, that it will be very difficult to progress without artificial and/or augmented brains.

Have a look at the orion's arms wordbuilding project. It's not perfect but the sci-fi is pretty hard and a large portion of the technology would almost certainly be possible under real world physics.
