I'm in an analysis class in college right now and I'm having a little bit of trouble. How did you guys study math in order to get an A in your advanced classes?

If you’re struggling with intro analysis you are very likely too stupid to do more difficult math or quantitative research with any significant success. I have never met an intelligent person that found low level undergrad math difficult

I never studied for honors analysis more than 30 mins a week and played vidya all day. Was a B student. Then when I decided to actually try the following year I became an A student. It's called having a high IQ and amazing memory.

I go through the lecture material (slides, and recordings), and as soon as I don't understand something, I post a question about it to the subject's designated forum. Then I keep going until I get to the next thing I don't understand, then I post a question about it, then I keep going etc.
Then I fall asleep at the end of the day, some of it makes more sense in the morning, I read through the answers to the questions I've posted, and keep going.
If I've gone through all the material I can in terms of lectures, I do exercises.
When tests are coming up I do old versions and practice versions.

Don't let that snake get into your head. It's entirely doable. Even if you have to take the subject over. You'll get better at learning and better at handling assessments. These are just learnable skills that are the result of memorising information through making the information meaningful, which happens as you get more into it and see the point of it, and relate it to other bits of math (as well as engineering, and other uses for math).
Literal 80IQ people can memorise huge quantities of information if it's meaningful to them. You're fine.

Just actually pay attention when going through proofs. Instead of just going through the steps like a drone actually engage with the proof. Ask yourself questions. Why do they do things the way they do them? Why do we need each of the assumptions? Would the proof still work or partially work if we changed some? What is the key idea of the proof?
You should be able to just remember something small like "we approximate using a piecewise linear function and show the correct bound by repeatedly applying the triangle inequality". You don't need to remember the exact function or manipulation of inequalities because that is something you trust yourself to be capable of.

It made more sense to get highly motivated in terms of what the degree and good marks would allow me to do, to learn a little about engineering and understand how what I was doing could be applied, and to read a little about theory on my own time to realise how what I was doing would ultimately connect to the theoretical side of math.

They need to fix it or be made to fill the gaps they're leaving.
And other students will help too. It builds momentum.
I guess that's another part of doing something hard. It makes you more hardheaded.

Read Barbara Oakley's "A Mind for Numbers." She writes like you would expect a female to write, in fact she even mentions reddit in the book, and for the most part the book reads like a shitty popsci article, but if you can get through that (it's not a very long book by any standards) there's quite a bit you can pull from it. Make sure to make notes so you can skim through again every now and then, too. It talks about genuine memory techniques, how to properly memorize things without screwing yourself up later, how to switch modes of thinking so that you can attack problems efficiently, how to manage your time effectively and do practice problems so you're not simply repeating the motions and just calculating instead of understanding, etc. If you need help with understanding proofs, there's many books that are good for that too.

Don't listen to the dickwavers, analysis can be tough. Do tons of problems, but also review your problems. What did you do at each step, when did you use the assumptions, can you word it better or more efficiently? When reading a proof for the first time a good technique is to follow along with specific example. For example, if reading a proof with the assumption that a function is continuous, pick a nice one like x^2 or something. Then when you have the structure of the proof down with the example, on your own try and reconstruct the proof. This can help you identify where in the proof they are taking care of pathologies that arise everywhere in analysis. You can also look at the book "Counter examples in analysis" a good analysis rule of thumb is that if isn't a theorem it probably isn't true. Another technique is to lecture about it, find an empty room with a chalkboard, and lecture to your empty classroom, you will quickly figure out when you can't explain something. That is what you need to review. One more thing, make friends, form study groups. Have no shame about asking questions. Me and couple guys would text pictures of our work to each other and point out errors or say what we did.

You're a fucking retard and don't know what you're talking about. The book has very little about math in it at all, and doesn't talk about any actual mathematics in it even once. As I said, the book is primarily about memorization, proper scheduling, how to switch modes of focus when learning, techniques for overcoming procrastination, and more.
