Right, so obviously the answer must be couched in probability.

If someone sires one offspring I would assume that there is a non-trivial probability that his line could die out. But if he's a Genghis Khan that sires a thousand offspring I'd imagine it's virtually impossible that he wouldn't have offspring 1,000 years later.

Obviously there's a number in between those two that would effectively guarantee success (say 99.9% probability).
