ethanol gets metabolized to what is basically vinegar. methanol on the other hand becomes the acid from ants. and inbetween that it is formaldehyde, also not nice.

yes yes that is a extremely interesting question ive been wanting to know aswell. from what ive heard a methanol buzz is almost identical to the one of ethanol. but what about propanol? is it like being drunk but more chomnk?

Simple alcohols are GABA agonists. Methanol metabolizes to formaldehyde and formic acid which are very toxic. Ethanol metabolizes to acetic acid and acetaldehyde which are less toxic and cause much less damage. I know isopropanol causes blistering in the digestive tract and I don't know how acetone metabolizes or affects the body. I don't know about n-propanol or the butanol derivatives. But they all get you drunk.

Acetone is a ketone body, so it can be handled metabolically. But I can't imagine drinking it straight would be pleasant or safe. Also ketoacidosis if it gets absorbed into the bloodstream

And it's the metabolite from isopropanol. I don't know if that was clear or not or if there was any confusion. Since I don't know where the idea of drinking it came from in an alcohol thread. But I get it on my skin occasionally when washing glass. I don't think it's that bad.

Acetone goes right through nitrile and latex which would be the gloves they'd provide most likely at least. And the gloves would impede evaporation.

long periods in this case are longer than just rinsing glassware, go get the SDS for it or look at the warning label on a 50 gallon drum of the stuff (which I've worked with on a job site before, fucking painters loved that shit)

Acetone is fine on your skin for temporary periods. Women put it on their finger nails to take nail polish off, that does damage the nail but only if done excessively. The polish itself probably does more damage.

Because methanol forms formic acid and doesn't metabolize right you get eye damage. Isopropyl alcohol turns to acetone which doesn't break down properly. However I wonder if you could drink 1-propanol and I know you can drink small amounts of 1-butanol to get extra drunk without too much harm. (Drink Chinese baijo if you want to experience butanol)

Its a tiny molecule thats able to get into just about any cell.
I red a great book ages ago called "buzzed" that is just a brief history human use of alcohol and caffeine with some primers on how they operate.
Its a quick read and if you're interested in the subject I'd recommend it, especially for a layman.

the reason is not at all the same for methanol and isopropanol. isopropanol is primarily just stronger, you could probably even get drunk off that relatively safely, just with a smaller amount. methanol is completely different, it gets metabolised to highly toxic formaldehyde, which can cross-link proteins and do other bad things, and then into formic acid causing acidosis
