I though it was all MA.
Syntax is not a waste of time in my opinion, just takes a lot of studying crap until you can tell it apart from the worthwhile approaches.
Neuro/cognitive linguistics, computational/mathematical linguistics, semantics and phonetics is science.
Morphology/Syntax/Phonology can get close if done with good intentions.
Pragmatics looks worthwhile but I am pretty clueless about it. To me it seems that it depends so much on other fields that are still developing, that it can get pseudo-sciency at times.
Sociolinguistics/variety linguistics has a lot of political bull.
Typology/language documentation and experimental/psycholinguistics is important because you need data for all the other fields.
If you want to avoid politics at all costs then computational is the way to go.
If you want the maximum amount of political bull, go into any field that is labeled "functional linguistics".
