OP said smarter not more knowledgeable. The average stem student is probably more knowledgeable at math than a toddler euler. Smarter on the other hand? probably not.

A child is oblivious to the outside world and is still in the phase of acquiring knowledge in experience to function in it.
Thats why it appears as not smarter.
If you mean intelligent I bin that in the ability to be flexible and adaptive in new situations or environments.
Kids are very adaptive and flexible thus the latin "tabula rasa"

In order to be a magician you need to be the smartest one in the room.

Anyone who strives to always be the smartest in the room is arrogant or trying to pull a fast one on someone.

I try to find as many places as possible where I am the stupidest or least knowledgeable one in the room, because it helps me become smarter and more knowledgeable. If I'm surrounding myself with people dumber than me there is much less room for learning.

I would guess the average stem student would be smarter than 3 year old Euler. At that point his brain wouldn't be developed enough and optimized enough to compete with a fully grown adult's brain. Even if at that point he were capable of understanding college level topics, his lack of development to the critical thinking areas of the brain would prevent him from delving any deeper than surface level at best.

then again, maybe I'm overestimating the average stem major

I once met a research fellow who was off the scale, knew everything from calligraphy to theoretical physics and needed just a few months to pick up a new language. Any new knowledge was immediately soaked up, never forgotten, ready to be applied. It made me wonder if we even were the same species.
