If I must use one and only one, there is no question: it has to be the mean which is essential to basically all statistical methods.

Presumably, however, you are thinking only in terms of statistical inference, in which the median can be a very useful and meaningful value. However, the mean is more sensitive to outliers, which is sometimes preferred. For inference, it is a matter of discriminating between the two, as limiting yourself to only one would be an unnecessary handicap.

An value greater than 3 and less than 100 would be equally valid medians for that set of numbers.

Algorithms will often take the average of the bounds (3 and 100 in this case) to producce a median of 51.5.
