They also make fun of retards who try to act like they've got an understanding of those fields based on shit they saw on TV, anon.
At least cop/lawyer shows aren't presented as educational shows about legal issues, and medical drama aren't presented as a way to learn about actual medicine.

I don't think there's anything wrong with pop-sci in its essence. The problem lies in the so-called "science enthusiasts" who don't realize their watching half-assed explanations and they feel like they're entitled to scientific opinions. I mean those people that tell you that black holes are portals to 7th dimension or some shit and then they go "dude just think outside the box lol I don't know why scientists are so close-minded"

The problem is that pop sci takes scientific information, filters out all the actually important stuff, then transforms the rest into as "cool" and "mind blowing" sounding as possible, then present it to the public, basically as entertainment. The end product is most of the time, not only unscientific, but are misrepresentation of the truth.

Not all of the pop sci is like that, but most of it is. Then you end up shit like "oh in QUANTUM physics matter can TELEPORT, and TIME GOES BACKWARDS, and objects are EVERYWHERE AT THE SAME TIME, and blah blah blah MAGIC".

Or you just end up with pop sci just pushing bullshit "inventions" to rip people off.

This is (at least partly) false. Feynman did a good job of it because he focused on predictive validity - which is the true aesthetic of science.

Modern popsci is an aesthetic lie - most of it is at least. People who promote it pretend science is about "answers" when it is really about degrees of certainty.

Then you have sci-fi popsci. This is the worst of the crowd for 2 reasons. 1) It promotes ideas people get their hopes up about and then are let down when it doesn't materialize which damages the value of scientists in peoples minds 2) The implicit message we are all working together towards some bright future is false, that the whole world can be some scientific hub of "enlightenment" given certain injustices are erased. This aesthetic is not only ugly, but dangerous.

On top of this most people who like this stuff don't care or appreciate the mathematics behind it and that's just sinful. Doing physics without math is like sex without orgasm.

A genuine problem is that it sometimes makes it hard for people in the sciences to find meaningful answers to their questions. If I am well-versed in physics, but don't know anything about mitosis, I'd like a rigorous explanation of what mitosis is, not a hand wavy overview. But when I start googling around, I have to wade through article after article of superficial pop science before I can find anything useful

It's a defence mechanism. When people bring up legitimate questions about whatever bullshit theory scientists are elucidating upon, be it; relativity, or evolution or strawberries are not berries etc. they can shift tack and say, but we don't really believe that we believe 'x'.
