I know little about micro biology so correct me if I'm wrong. A vaccine consists of dead microbes of the specific disease. So why does it take so long to develop vaccines. Is it just hard to kill a microbe and preserve it?

It is hard to kill a microbe and preserve it. Kill it too much and it does nothing, don't kill it enough and you're just injecting them with a pathogen. In the old days we used simplistic inoculation techniques for immunizations and they were much less reliable than modern vaccines.

Depends. Sometimes just having antibodies present in your body does the trick, sometimes a dead virus will cause your immune system to handle it, sometimes you need a living (but weakened) virus.
