Math major just graduated here.
If I want to do research in AI/machine learning, should I get a masters in stats or a masters in comp sci/comp eng?
Only took CS I.

Just do udacity courses if you want to learn programming. They give you a free month so if you finish the course within the month, you don't have to pay.

yeah basically.
for anyone in the know, masters is the equivalent of doing an online certificate. granted, it carries a bit more prestige, but you're either better off interning or applying straight away or even going for a phd even though you don't think you can make it. a masters is just a quick way to piss out money when there are better alternatives.
>tl;dr do an internship, apply for the job, or go for a phd at a tier 2 or 3 uni. just don't fucking do a masters

companies would much rather hire a math major with intern experience than an autistic cs major with only cs experience.
math background > cs background
just make sure you have the social skills to prove it. internships will provide this.
if you're trying for academia research, then you absolutely need a phd 100%

You don't really need undergrad research experience for a PhD, at least not in math--unless you are only looking for top schools. Keep in mind unless you are trying to go into academia, school prestige doesn't mean that much. Recommendations OTOH are extremely important. Try to get into a PhD, just having a math bachelor's is not good for industry, unlike say a CS or engineering bachelor's.

So yeah I've found that I'm fucked with just a math bachelors. Espeically in this job climate. Maybe what I do is go for internships next year. Are there such a thing as internships during the year or do they only occur during the summer? Sorry I'm retarded. I can commute into the city from my parents' house for a year if need be.

Huh, didn't realize PhD prestige doesn't matter for industry. I'll keep that in mind. Thanks.

go for internships during the year. corona will screw up literally everything. email companies you want to work for even if they don't have posted internships asking if you can work. they will likely do unposted positions at some places. just don't be sad at a few rejections.
phd prestige matters if you're doing actual math. if you're doing math for a consulting firm then no, all you need is experience. but if you want to teach at a college then of course you need a phd

Nah math is an inherently beautiful subject and I’m really glad I studied it instead of CS. It really expands and taxes your kind, changes the way you think, and gives you transferable skills that you can apply to so many disciplines. We just have to figure out where to start

Math and logic is perennial, taking a class in iPhone app development that will be out of date in 3 years is not

of course. take it from me, I emailed literally 50 profs at universities and got responses from over half of them without them knowing what my qualifications were. I'm now doing a phd at a top school.
the same will work for you you just have to put yourself out there. was I sad when the guy at boulder didnt respond to me? of course. but I have a newer and better prof at a better named school. don't be discouraged and just fucking go for it.

You can find Deep Reinforment Learning classes from Berkly on YouTube taught by the Open AI team, and can get started literally right now with Tensorflow 2.0

As for school....I have no advice.
