Educate me on Xylitol

How can it be good for your teeth and remove already existing plaque while preventing new plaque buildup?
Also, can it have adverse effects if you use it daily? how much is too much?

It starves the bacteria that causes plaque. Not sure it does much for existing plaque but the mechanical aspect of brushing your teeth likely helps break down what's already there.

Sounds like more studies are needed. Also tooth paste and gum aren't meant to be swallowed. Obviously you still absorb some amount of xylitol from having it in your mouth but nothing like how much you'd get from chewing it.

both my dad and my uncle had them
although I can't claim their diets were healthy (they did eat lots of leafy greens though)

the bacteria can feast on almost anything, so the best you can do after eating is drink a glass of water so the bacteria doesn't have much to eat.
The acid attack makes the tooth enamel softer for about 30 minutes, so don't brush your teeth until that time has passed after eating.

Using it as a sugar substitute in food like baked goods would of course count as ingestion but the amount you inadvertently swallow/absorb from toothpaste or gum doesn't seem like it would be a lot, at least comparatively.

yes, but how?

but if this is all it does, how do the bacteria die out? it's not like you don't eat anything at all and just chew on xylitol gum all day
if these bacteria can feed on anything, then your regular diet keeps them alive

am I missing something?

Think this is the part you're missing. Normal sugars are fermentable, which is what bacteria does to them to be able to digest them. Think of it as insoluble fiber for bacteria.

Not gonna lie ... I had a horrible event recently from what i assumed was the Sorbitol in tart Cherry Juice I'd been drinking for the melatonin to get to sleep... it shredded my intestines like a heard of lamprey fresh outta rehab..
